Niedawno odkryłem takie coś jak: MSDN Magazine: Digital Magazine Downloads. Na stronie tej znajdzimy cyfrowe wersje magazynu MSDN z bieżącego roku, oraz archiwum za lata 2003 – 2009. Łącznie 88 wydań wraz z: Visual Studio 2005 Guided Tour oraz Visual Studio 2008 Launch Issue.

Podczas konferencji  SQLDAY 2009 jaką miałem przyjemność prowadzić we Wrocławiu, dostałem jeden z najlepszych prezentów jaki mi się trafił w ciągu ostatnich kilku lat. Jest to niezwykle inspirująca książka (raptem około 1000 stron) pod tytułem Microsoft SQL Server 2008 od środka: Zapytania w języku T-SQL. Jej autorami jest grupa znanych specjalistów z tej materii w skład której wchodzą: Lubor Kolar, Dejan Serka, Steve Kass; nad która pieczę trzyma Itzik Ben-Gan. Książka jest fantastyczna i choc możnaby założyć, że dotyczy tylko SQL to w trakcie czytania wciąga coraz bardziej, niczym dobra, acz pogmatwana swoimi wątkami powieść. Postanowiłem więc od czasu do czasu wpisać na blogu jej fragmenty, które są według mnie ważne i ciekawe, oraz które to mogą zainspirować któregoś z moich czytelników do sięgnięcia po tę właśnie pozycję. Owe wpisy będą otagowane zwrotem ITZIK POWIEDZIAŁ.

Wiele sposród angielskojezycznych osób profesjonalnie zajmujących się bazami danych wymawia skrót SQL jako sequel, pomimo tego że poprawna wymowa to S-Q-L (“es kju el“). Mozna postawić pewną hipotezę co do źródeł tej nieprawidłowej wymowy. Moim zdaniem, stoją za tym zarówno przyczyny historyczne jak i językowe.

Co do przyczyn historycznych należy przypomnieć, że w roku 1970 firma IBM opracowała język programowania o nazwie SEQUEL, która była akronimem od Structured English QUEry language (strukturalny język zapytań w języku angielskim). Język ten został zaprojektowany jako język do manipulowania danymi zapisanymi w systemie bazodanowym o nazwie System R, opartym na opracowanym przez dr. Edgara F. Coddiego modelu RDBMS (Relational Database Management Systems – systemy zarządzania relacyjnymi bazami danych). W późniejszym okresie z powodu sporu o zastrzeżony znak towarowy akronim SEQUEL został skrócony do SQL. Instytut ANSI przyjął język SQL jako standard w roku 1986, a organizacja ISO zrobiła to w roku 1987. Instytut ANSI zadeklarował, że oficjalna wymowa skrótu SQL to “es kju el”, ale wydaje się, że ten fakt nie jest powszechnie znany.

Jeśli zaś chodzi o przyczyny językowe, wymowa sequel jest po prostu bardziej płynna, zwłaszcza dla osób mówiących w języku angielskim. Z tego powodu sam często używam tej formy.
